We are currently exploring an attractive opportunity to begin a national project aimed at literacy training for CUPE members with federal government funding. Funding is available from the federal governments Department of Human Resources Development and discussions with government officials have suggested that they would be open to funding the first phase of a literacy project that would consist of gathering information on what CUPE locals are already doing. Funding would be available to cover the costs of researching these local projects and compiling a report and recommendations on the best way for CUPE to proceed with literacy training. The first phase may also include funding to cover a national meeting of locals involved in workplace basic skills programs in order to share information and develop priorities. Further funding would be available in stages to pursue these priorities. We know that literacy is a crucial area of work that is new to our union. Given limited financial resources to carry out new projects, the availability of federal funding presents us with a rare and exciting opportunity.
