Literacy is a union issue and that is the theme of our first national conference on workplace literacy and basic skills coming up January 19-21 in Hull, Quebec. While the labour movement has been working on this issue for a number of years, CUPE is the first union to hold a conference dedicated exclusively to workplace literacy. The conference is one part of the CUPE literacy project that got underway last June. The weekend conference will include workshops on making literacy an issue in the local union, the difference between labour models and models on literacy programs and the various methods for funding literacy programs in the workplace. The objective of the conference is to energize participants to take action on literacy needs in their own locals.
