VANCOUVER By cutting the rape crisis line, the Campbell Liberals will endanger women and end their one hope for help if they are raped or threatened by rape, CUPE BC says.

Women across the province, some of them CUPE members, will live again in fear for their safety, thanks to this latest blow by the provincial government, CUPE BC president Barry ONeill said.

Cutting the rape crisis line is about as low as it goes, he added. Its getting hard to imagine what the Liberals will come up with next to devastate the lives of women and many vulnerable groups that they have attacked.

Womens Minister Lynn Stephens has told women to get a better job if they want pay equity, ONeill said. I shudder to think what advice she will have for them this time?

The Women Against Violence Against Women crisis line gets about 400 calls a month. The WAVAW line shuts down Jan. 8, 2003. The B.C. Solicitor General has promised a new government-run line to field the calls.

They’re getting rid of a necessary and effective program and replacing it with promises, ONeill said.
