Out for our rights

The season for Pride celebrations is upon us! Pride parades, Pride weeks and other Pride events are an important symbol of strength and solidarity for the LGBTT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgendered) community.

Every summer, LGBTT CUPE members and supporters come together during Pride events to celebrate diversity in gender identity and sexual orientation.

CUPE is a proud advocate for LGBTT rights and freedoms. Our commitment is to fight against discrimination and hate in our workplaces and in our communities.

Through the work of our Pink Triangle Committee and with our coalition partners, we’ve helped make strides for LGBTT people in Canada and internationally.

We’ve pushed for anti-bullying programs in our workplaces and schools to stop discrimination.

We’ve worked with organizations like Egale and the Uganda Pride Alliance to support LGBTT people who face violence and sometimes death in their communities at home and abroad.

We opposed provincial legislation in Saskatchewan that would have allowed commissioners to decline to marry same-sex couples. The proposed legislation was ruled unconstitutional by the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal.

We continue to fight for the inclusion of gender identity and gender expression in human rights legislation across the country. Transgender and transsexual are among the most at-risk groups to suffer violence and discrimination. It is imperative that these rights be recognized.

And we work everyday to ensure our LGBTT brothers and sisters can work in a discrimination and harassment-free environment.

CUPE is proud to support and participate in Pride. We encourage all of our members to participate in Pride events in their communities, and we wish all participants a very happy celebration.
