On the eve of a crucial committee vote on solid waste privatization, Toronto and York Region Labour Council President John Cartwright has published a column calling on the city to keep it public.

In his op/ed, Cartwright urges the mayor and councillors to reject any further privatization of the city’s solid waste services. He draws on the findings of both city and independent consultant analysis to call on the city to keep control of solid waste services now and in the future by maintaining the current balance of public and private delivery.

Any more privatization is all risk and no reward, says Cartwright. Instead, the city should keep east-end collection public. In doing so, Toronto will protect the environment, provide excellent service to residents, and continue to be a good employer.

The City of Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meets on Tuesday, September 22.
