GUELPH – Hospital workers and representatives of Local 1033 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) will protest the elimination of 31 Registered Practical Nursing positions (RPN’s) at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph with an information picket tomorrow, Wednesday, June 12th, at 10:30 a.m., at the Edinburgh St. Entrance of the hospital.

These cuts will affect patient safety,” says Bonnie Snyder, president of CUPE Local 1033. “Most of these cuts affect patients in medically complex care and it will be more difficult for staff to look after their needs.” The hospital wants to cut the RPN positions and have lower paid health care aides fill in the gaps. “Health care aides are not qualified to perform as many procedures as RPN’s,” says Snyder, also a health care aide. “The patients need our RPN’s and we’re asking the community to help us stop the cuts.”
