(Amherst) – CUPE hospital workers will be holding an information picket tomorrow morning at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center.

The event will take place between 6:30 am and 9:00 am in front of the hospital’s main entrance Tuesday, September 1st.

Currently, some 3,500 CUPE hospital workers are in bargaining with hospital employers across the province (all hospitals outside the Capital District), but talks are not going well at all.

CUPE’s Acute Care Co-ordinator, Wayne Thomas, says, “Rather than sticking with the model of bargaining which has resulted in 10 years of labour peace and good contracts for hospital workers, the employers are now trying to move to a model which would see some hospital workers treated differently than others.”

Says Thomas, “This push is coming from the NSAHO (Nova Scotia Association of Healthcare Organizations) because they believe it will tip the balance of power in their favour.  But CUPE members are saying all hospital workers must be treated equally.”
