Ontario hospital worker leaders Michael Hurley and Sharleen Stewart have an opinion piece in today’s Toronto Star that suggests a way for provincial health minister George Smitherman to cut costs: hire fewer consultants. (See Where to find hospital savings)

Hurley, president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (CUPE) and Sharleen Stewart, the Canadian director of SEIU, make seven suggestions on how to make Ontario hospitals more efficient and how to improve health care.

But they also suggest starting to cut costs by asking for a refund on a consultants report that proposes the creation of local health integration networks.
