La Prairie, Tuesday, July 24, 2001 Without a collective agreement since December 31 2000, the 60 inside and outside workers of the City of La Prairie are on a general strike since midnight, July 24.

Services affected in the city of 19,500 people will be those of road maintenance, water supply system and sewage system maintenance. Will also be affected by the work stoppage are the following services : parks maintenance, Community Centre, City Hall, municipal garage, library, and public security.

The city has proven its unwillingness during the bargaining and conciliation sessions since the beginning of the year. Mayor Guy Dupr 0077ho, during the strike of 1984, was the citys Executive Director, seems to want a confrontation more than real solutions to the problems of labour relations, said Richard Moreau, President of Local 309 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE-QFL).

The main issues are the pension plan, the accreditation of permanent status, salaries and job evaluation. Despite the municipalitys position, we ensure the public of our commitment to maintain essential services, concluded the local president.
