A CUPE Global Justice Fund project will broadcast the Americas Social Forum (FSAG), a major event during the World Social Forum in Guatemala on October 7-12, 2008.

Radio Libertad, now in its second year of CUPE funding, is part of a group of organizations setting up an independent media space at the FSAG. The space will guarantee radio and video coverage both through broadcasting and streaming on the Internet, as well as publishing a daily bulletin and posting to various web sites.

In 2004 the first Americas Social Forum was held in Quito, Ecuador, where organizations from the different social movements of the Americas gathered to strengthen their struggles and promote alternatives to destructive neo-liberal policies.

An independent media space is important to guarantee alternative information on the struggles and advances of the popular movements of the Americas,” Braggio said.

The week before the forum, we will be doing an intensive training session with various organizations from Latin America, so as to integrate a collective of organizations to guarantee coverage” says project worker Marcella Braggio, a Canadian. “Radio Libertad will de broadcasting live and retransmitting with other community radios from Guatemala, and streaming via Internet.”
