CUPE 5678 concludes early learning program agreementJul 15, 2010 02:51 PM
BROCKVILLE, ON – Local 5678 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) reached a ground-breaking agreement with the Upper Canada District School Board that will help ensure a successful roll-out of the new Early Learning Program (ELP) in September.
“This letter of agreement demonstrates all parties’ significant commitment to the future of the ELP in Ontario,” said Susan Hanson, president, CUPE Local 5678.
The letter of agreement is the first signed by CUPE in Ontario to incorporate the terms of the recently negotiated Provincial Discussion Table (PDT) agreement between the Province, school boards and the unions which represent the bulk of Ontario’s school board staff. The PDT agreement has now been incorporated into the current collective agreement between UCDSB and CUPE, and will be in effect until 2012.
“This is an exciting time for parents, children and early childhood educators (ECEs) as we move forward on early learning. I know the early learning professionals the board will be hiring are committed to providing students with the best possible education. The agreement we reached yesterday with UCDSB will help that happen,” said Hanson.
“They will now be able to focus on the important task of making early learning a success, secure in the knowledge there is a system in place that is ready to meet their needs, so they can meet students’ needs,” she added.
