BROCKVILLE Education assistants and workers from the Upper Canada District School Board, members of Local 5678 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will hold an information picket and make a presentation to the school board tomorrow, Wednesday, June 13, at 6:00 p.m. to fight planned cutbacks that will hurt our childrens education.

We have learned the Board is planning to reduce the services of Education Assistants (EAs) in our classrooms, says Lisa Zufelt, president of CUPE Local 5678. The Board plans to reduce hours for education assistants and the cuts could lead to layoffs hurting the quality of education in our classrooms. The community wont stand for it.

Education workers, parents and supporters are invited to join the information picket and presentation to convince school trustees to prevent these cuts from being implemented.

CUPE Local 5678 represents 1300 education workers at the Upper Canada District School Board, including 500 Education Assistants in public schools covering a wide area, including Brockville, Cornwall, Perth, Smiths Falls, Prescott, Prescott Russel, Glengary, Vankleek Hill, Almonte, Carleton Place, Lanark, Pakenham, Westport, Portland, Delta, Alexandria, Maxville, Lancaster, Williams Town, Gananoque, Athens, Merrickville, Kemptville, Iroquois, Morrisburg, Winchester, Chesterville, Embrun, Russel, Limoges, Rockland, Plantagenet, Alfred and Hawkesbury.
