You can pressure the Liberal party to get on board to defeat the ratification of a free trade deal with Colombia. The Conservatives are promising to sign a deal in early 2008, so act now.

Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett has set an example for other Liberal MPs to follow. In a letter to a concerned constituent on Dec. 13, 2007, she wrote:

“Mr. Harper has abandoned the long-standing Canadian approach of promoting trade and economic relations with other countries while advancing the protection of human rights.

“The proposed Free Trade Agreement with Colombia is being negotiated without regard for concerns about alleged connections between the allies and relatives of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe leftist insurgents.

“On July 16, 2007, Mr. Harper said it would be “ridiculous” to address human rights and social issues prior to establishing trade relations. This position is incompatible with Canada’s humanitarian commitments.”
