(Dartmouth) – With a new school year about to start, CUPE local 4814, representing Crossing Guards throughout Halifax Regional Municipality, is reminding all motorists to be extra careful when travelling through school zones.
Local 4814 president Glenna Casavechia says, “School children are coming back from their summer vacations and are anxious to see their friends again. They may not be paying as much attention to traffic as they should, so we’re asking the public to be attentive and extra careful when driving through school areas.”
“I’d also like to remind drivers that starting this Saturday, the speed limit in designated school zones has been reduced to 30 km/h. This applies to streets that currently have a 50 km/h speed limit”, says Casavechia. “And don’t forget, speeding in schools zones results in double the fine.”
Casavechia says, “So, as you’re travelling about on your daily routine, I encourage you to drive slow and watch out for children, because they may not be watching out for you.”
