General Vice-President, New Brunswick
Daniel Légère has been a union activist ever since he was first hired as a correctional officer in St. Hilaire, N.B. in 1980. While still on probation, he became a shop steward and fought an unjustified reprimand. His involvement has taken many forms in CUPE and in the community ever since.

Brother Légère was elected first vice-president and then president of his local, representing workers at the Moncton detention center. A father of three daughters, Brother Légère took a break from 1994 to 1997 to spend more time with his family.

He then returned to union life, becoming president of his area local, and then first provincial vice-president of his local. He became provincial president of CUPE 1251 in 2000. He also served in various capacities on CUPE’s New Brunswick division executive before being elected the division president in 2005. He became a member of CUPE’s National Executive Board in June 2005.

A member of the New Democratic Party, Brother Légère sits on the executive of his federal riding association. He is also active in the province’s Common Front for Social Justice. Brother Légère believes strongly in the power of working together to win.

I am committed to strengthening solidarity pacts as well as strengthening relations with coalition partners to ensure the right to free collective bargaining is protected for all CUPE members,” says Légère. “I’m also committed to promoting coordinated and strategic bargaining, while respecting local autonomy, in order to get the best possible agreements for our members.”
