(Halifax) A majority of Teaching Assistants and Part-Time Instructors at Dalhousie University have given their union a strike mandate.

CUPE Local 3912 represents some 930 TAs and Part-Time Instructors at Dal. By the close of the voting on March 2, approximately two thirds of the members had cast ballots and a clear majority had voted in favour of strike if a negotiated settlement cannot be reached.

Outstanding issues include the pay level for Teaching Assistants, on which both sides remain far apart, and language that would prevent the university from deducting any pay increases TAs receive from their scholarship stipends.

The union has applied to have a conciliator appointed by the Department of Labour.
