SASKATOON– CUPE Local 4254 welcomed 133 new members who work for Prairie Spirit School Division at Blaine Lake, Leask, Green Leaf Colony and Martensville schools and the maintenance department at Prairie Spirit.

“We are very pleased that these workers have voted to be a part of our union,“ says CUPE 4254 President Grace Wudrick. “We welcome these new members and look forward to getting to know them when we meet this fall.”

The workers from Prairie Spirit School Division #206 voted in favour of becoming CUPE members in mid-June and the Saskatchewan Labour Board finalized the certification order in July.

The education support workers will be covered under the present Local 4254 contract. They will meet with their union in the fall. CUPE 4254 and the school division will work together to ensure a smooth transition.

We are continuing to meet with the remaining education workers who are not unionized in Prairie Spirit School Division to encourage them to join CUPE,” says Janice Janzen, CUPE member organizer. “Together we can move forward for a better future for workers and students in Prairie Spirit.”

Employees at the following locations are the new members of CUPE 4254: Valley Manor Elementary School; Venture Heights Elementary School; Martensville High School; Green Leaf Colony School; Blaine Lake Composite School; and Leask Community School and the maintenance department within Prairie Spirit.

CUPE 4254 now represents 378 members at Prairie Spirit School Division including educational associates, administrative assistants, caretakers, bus drivers, maintenance staff and technicians. They provide services that keep schools running smoothly and safe for students.

CUPE is the education union that currently represents well over 6,500 support, caretaker, maintenance and bus driver employees of Saskatchewan school divisions.
