VANCOUVER—CUPE BC’s 14 delegates at the 2009 UBCM Annual Convention are talking with community leaders to highlight the work CUPE members do. The goal is to renew CUPE’s commitment to make B.C.’s communities stronger and more sustainable.
“UBCM is a great opportunity to connect with elected leaders across the province and share information with them,” says Heather Inglis, CUPE Local Government Liaison. “This year, our booth in the Marketplace focuses on P3s, Local First/Local Procurement, and keeping services public.”
CUPE general vice presidents Cindy McQueen and Deb Taylor, along with Mike Jackson chair of the Municipal Committee, are staffing the booth which has been a popular stop for UBCM delegates.
“This has been an excellent forum to meet local politicians in a relaxed atmosphere,” says Jackson.
CUPE BC hosts a very popular UBCM reception, and this year was no exception. At the Wednesday evening reception, CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill welcomed all delegates, MLAs, Local presidents, guests and staff. O’Neill thanked them for their work in communities and pledged that CUPE will continue to build strong communities.
