CUPE PEI may need every one of its members if the provincial budget brings bad news, CUPE division president Donalda MacDonald said this week.

The province has been engaging in a cost-cutting program review where everything including privatization and contracting out has been on the table.

Meanwhile, the provincial government is predicting a $33 million deficit.

We would have to have our heads buried in the sand not to recognize that the size of the deficit in this province has implications for us, MacDonald told the media.

The union has launched a radio ad campaign to promote the value of public services. MacDonald said the response to the ads was positive.

Even I wasn’t aware of the services that some of our members provide, she said. That’s the message we want to get out.
