TRURO, NS – CUPE Nova Scotia is joining a chorus of union and organizations across Atlantic Canada who say the Harper Government’s so-called “reforms” to EI should be scrapped altogether.

President Danny Cavanagh says, “Right now these planned changes have created mass confusion around the changes to the employment insurance system. The most recent announcement from Human Resources Minister Dianne Finley to fix a problem surrounding how much a worker can earn before affecting benefits has muddied the waters even more.”

Cavanagh says his union, along with other unions and community groups in the four Atlantic provinces, is organizing a march and rally for this weekend in Truro, which will end up at Tory MP Scott Armstrong’s constituency office.

Cavanagh says members of the public who are concerned about these cuts are more than welcome to join them. The event is planned for Saturday, October 27 at 12:00 pm.

He says Truro Mayor Bill Mills and Colchester County Mayor Bob Taylor, both recently re-elected to their positions, are scheduled to speak at the rally because they both understand the devastating impact these changes would have on our province and our communities.

(ATTENTION ASSIGNMENT/PHOTO EDITORS: THE MARCH WILL BEGIN AT 11:45, OCT. 27 AT THE HOLIDAY INN ON PRINCE ST. IN TRURO AND TRAVEL TO SCOTT ARMSTRONG’S CONSTITUENCY OFFICE AT 18 WILLOW ST.)
