ST. JOHN’S – CUPE NL President Wayne Lucas is off to Ottawa this week to team up with a group of labour and community partners who’ll be lobbying MPs on recent cuts to Employment Insurance (EI).

Lucas says, “Just a week or so ago, Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea announced changes to the eligibility calculations for workers in what she described as the more remote parts of PEI.

“We saw this as an acknowledgement that the changes in EI are negatively affecting communities across the country, including here in NL,” says Lucas.

The original changes to EI were contained in Bill C38 - the notorious April 2012 Omnibus Budget that contained sweeping negative changes to the EI system without any consultation or debate with Canadians.

Says Lucas, “On the heels of this apparent back-tracking by a Harper cabinet minister, we’re hoping to convince the federal government to scrap these ill-conceived changes to the EI system altogether.”
