CUPE 1858 members will join together to help clean up their neighbourhood and take part in the first “CUPE Cares” event Saturday, March 24 in Nanaimo.

40 support staff workers who work at Vancouver Island University (VIU) will meet Saturday morning to pick up garbage in the area along Nanaimo River Rd. and Harewood Mines Rd.

CUPE 1858 president Tara Mitchell says that when the executive was setting goals for 2012, one of their priorities was to give back to the community in a series of events called “CUPE Cares”.

It is pretty amazing when 40 members agree to come out, and in many cases bring partners and children, to spend a Saturday morning cleaning up garbage,” says Mitchell. “Our members really care about the community that so generously supports VIU.”

The local hopes that this will be the first of many “CUPE Cares” events.
