Lethbridge, AB - Warm feet make for a warm heart.

That’s the attitude taken by caretakers and maintenance staff at three Lethbridge area school districts after their union sponsored a sock drive, collecting socks for five charities.

Gail Petrie, Treasurer of CUPE Local 290, which sponsored the drive, says the union collected more than 1,700 pairs of socks from parents, students and school staff over the last month.

“The response to our appeal has really been heartening,” said Petrie. “This is only the second year we’ve done this, but people are really starting to make it a part of their Christmas celebrations. I hope we can do even better next year.”

Petrie said that the union members noticed that other groups collected food and other clothing items, but wondered why no one seemed concerned about warm feet.

“In this climate, keeping your feet warm is essential,” said Petrie. “If we can help a few families in need stay snug and warm, we’ve done our job.”

CUPE members will present the socks next Tuesday morning at Park Meadow School.
