WINNIPEG CUPE Manitoba members will present a $10,000 cheque to the Childrens Hospital Fund for Children tomorrow. The money is the most recent contribution the unions members are making to pediatric oncology as part of ongoing fundraising for Manitobas children with cancer.

We started fundraising among our members several years ago when we adopted pediatric oncology as our ongoing charity, CUPE Manitoba President Paul Moist said. Our volunteers work for months collecting donations and organizing a silent auction held annually at our CUPE Manitoba convention. This year alone more than $4,000 was raised at that one event.

Moist said CUPE members Darlene Gagnon and Debbie Burgess, both from Brandon, who serve on the unions fundraising committee deserve the credit for making the fundraising such a success. Since 1995 CUPE Manitoba members have given about $40,000 to pediatric oncology. The money is used to fund a variety of special needs equipment used on ward CK5 where care is given to severely ill children.

Moist, Gagnon, Burgess and a member from CUPE Local 1550 will be on hand for the cheque presentation to Ann Reichert, Manager of Patient Care at the Childrens Hospital tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. Local 1550 represents members who work in cancer treatment areas at the Health Sciences Centre.
