Charles Fleury, National Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), along with other CUPE leaders, including Candace Rennick, CUPE Ontario Secretary-Treasurer, and Henri Giroux, President of North Bay and District CUPE Council, and CUPE members and supporters from the community, will join striking Bonfield municipal workers on Tuesday, August 13 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., for a solidarity BBQ.
“The mayor has cancelled the Township’s scheduled council meeting again,” said Steve Boyle, CUPE national representative for CUPE 4616-2. “In place of the cancelled meeting, we will host a public Solidarity BBQ to hold the mayor and his council to account for pushing their own workers on the picket line and thank Bonfield residents for their support for our 16 striking members.”

The 16 workers remain united to achieve a fair contract from a mayor determined to push contract concessions and keep the municipality’s workers on the picket line thereby denying Bonfield residents the public services they rely on. “From demanding concessions to threats of contracting out, to imposing terms and conditions of employment, to now cancelling council meetings, this mayor has shown how far he can go to get his way,” continued Boyle. “But our members are getting strong support, not only from the Bonfield community, but from workers across different communities who are united to say no to concessions and no to bullying tactics. They will all be here to show solidarity and to tell this mayor to get back to the bargaining table and offer a fair contract to end this strike that he caused.” The front line municipal workers have been on strike since Thursday, August 1.
