CUPE Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) say they will be bringing their own message to the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities conference in Truro tomorrow.

Its time for municipal leaders to stand up to the slash and burn agenda of the Tory and Liberal governments, says CUPE Nova Scotia Vice-President Danny Cavanagh. The union is asking municipal governments to join them in opposing the gutting of services and the downloading of responsibilities by the provincial and federal governments.

Our communities are being decimated by health and education cuts, while the federal government boasts about the largest surplus ever recorded for the first quarter of this year, says Cavanagh. When are they going to start returning taxpayers dollars to the communities which so desperately need assistance?

CUPE members are planning to demonstrate outside of the UNSM meeting at noon tomorrow at Keddys in Truro. They are asking members of the public and community organizations to join them.

There is a lot of power at the municipal level, and our elected representatives should be using this power to influence decision making for the benefit our communities, Cavanagh concludes.
