Meet Kelly Albucz – CUPE member and very active community volunteer. Albucz is the Administrative Assistant in the Planning and Community Services and Corporate Services Departments at the District of North Saanich and a member of CUPE 374.

“I just don’t know how to say no when it comes to being asked to volunteer in my community,” says Albucz.

She has been active in the local Scouting movement for 19 years. Both her boys, now 18 and 25, were scouting enthusiasts. While they have moved on, Albucz maintains her role in the organization. Her love of the organization is clear: “I will probably always be involved in one way or another with Scouts.”

Through her local and regional involvement, Kelly has trained others to be leaders in the organization. Currently, Albucz is the group commissioner overseeing the operations side of local scouting activities, as well as being the interface for any regional activities for the Scouts in her area.

Her community contributions don’t stop with Scouts. Albucz runs the preschool Sunday School program at St. John’s United Church and is involved with various community activities supported by the church.

Albucz also participates in the fundraising dinner hosted by Deep Cove Elementary School. The school is twinned with Motati Primary School in Leribe, Lesotho. Kelly helps by cooking the Lesotho staple “pap and beans” for the dinner.

At work, Albucz is part of the United Way committee, adding her ideas to the annual fundraising program, and always one of the first to offer when help is needed.

Albucz and her husband Gus are active parks volunteers with the District of North Saanich, participating in parks cleanups and invasive plant pulls.

This year Albucz is expanding her community activities by organizing a “Hike and Bike” for the annual North Saanich Flavour Trail.

To know Kelly Albucz is to know a person who loves what she does and shines in being an active and contributing member of her community, whether at work or at home.
