The season for Pride celebrations is upon us! Pride parades, Pride weeks and other Pride events are an important symbol of strength and solidarity for the LGBTTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, intersex) community.

  • Pride events are planned in most major cities. To find out what’s happening in your local area, check out the Queer Calendar at MyGSA.ca.

  • Order special Pride schwag, like bracelets, bandanas, and frisbees for your pride events. Email equality@cupe.ca.

  • Send us your photos of CUPE members in action at the parades and events! Send them to comm@cupe.ca.

Every summer, LGBTTI CUPE members and supporters come together during Pride events to celebrate diversity in gender identity and sexual orientation.

CUPE is a proud advocate for LGBTTI rights and freedoms. Our commitment is to fight against discrimination and hate in our workplaces and in our communities.

Through the work of our Pink Triangle Committee and with our coalition partners, we’ve helped make strides for LGBTTI people in Canada and internationally.

We’ve pushed for anti-bullying programs in our workplaces and schools. With new workshops for our members and a new anti-bullying brochure, we’re continuing our work to stop this discrimination.

We’ve worked with organizations like Egale to support LGBTTI people who face violence and sometimes death in their communities at home and abroad.

We continue to fight for the inclusion of gender identity and gender expression in human rights legislation across the country. Transgender and transsexual are among the most at-risk groups to suffer violence and discrimination. We supported legislation recently passed by the Ontario government that will include “gender identity” and “gender expression” in the human rights code. Similar legislation is expected to pass in Manitoba soon, and a federal bill in the House of Commons has passed second reading. It is imperative that these rights be recognized.

And we work everyday to ensure our LGBTTI members can work in a discrimination and harassment-free environment.

CUPE is proud to support and participate in Pride. We encourage all of our members to participate in Pride events in their communities, and we wish all participants a very happy celebration.
