CUPE extends its support to public sector workers in Korea, who have been dismissed from their jobs because of their union membership and activism, and joins unions across the world in calling on the Korean Government to protect trade union rights and the right to freedom of assocation.

We also extend our best wishes and solidarity to Korean Government Employees’ Union (KGEU) leader Kim Jungnam, who has been on hunger strike in the streets of Seoul since January 15, calling for the Korean government to respect core international labour standards.

“These workers have been dismissed for standing up against privatization, for fighting to defend public services, or simply for being active union members. At home or abroad, we will always fight attacks from governments on the right to collective bargaining,” said CUPE National President Paul Moist.
