Among the names contained in confidential documents obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists are 450 Canadians who have hidden millions of dollars in offshore tax havens.

A recent CBC report shows the urgent need for the Canadian government to tackle the growing issue of tax havens and make sure that the wealthiest Canadians are paying their fair share of taxes.

As a founding member of Canadians for Tax Fairness, CUPE has been calling for a fair tax system that opposes the use of offshore tax havens and banking hideaways. Delegates to our last national convention also passed a resolution calling for these necessary changes.

The sheer scale of the tax drain revealed in the leaked documents is overwhelming, and highlights the need for immediate action. It’s an issue of fairness and of social justice.
