This year’s convention, “Our Communities, Our Future”, will focus on CUPE’s efforts to defend public services at home and abroad. Following an opening night video featuring a segment on CUPE BC’s projects in Colombia, Cuba and Nicaragua, CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill will deliver the opening night address.

Thursday’s guest speakers are CUPE National president Paul Moist (11 am) and BC NDP leader Carole James (1:30 pm). Friday’s guest speakers are CUPE National secretary-treasurer Claude Généreux (11 am) and federal NDP leader Jack Layton (1:30 pm), and Saturday’s guest speaker is BC Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair (11 am).

This is an election year at convention, with the positions of president, secretary-treasurer, general vice-presidents, trustee and diversity vice-presidents all going to a delegate vote. On Thursday at 3 pm, delegates will participate in a mass labour rally at the Legislature to protest Bill 36, the legislative overhaul of Translink.
