First Nations representatives played a key role in the Peoples Summit and in the lobby activities around the First Ministers meeting. At several events, CUPE members and social allies joined with Aboriginal activists to press that the First Ministers close the gap, not the door.

Assembly of First Nations representative Elaine Johnston, speaking at the Summit, expressed her appreciation for the solidarity and support shown by the labour movement and others for the cause of Aboriginal health and justice. In particular, she spoke of the strength she felt seeing a photo of the AFN flag surrounded by CUPE flags at the rally outside the First Ministers meeting.
