(Truro) – The union representing employees with Colchester County has applied for a conciliator to be appointed in their contract talks.

CUPE Local 3945 represents 30 employees who work in sewage treatment, solid waste and public works for the County.

CUPE National Representative Peter Baxter says while the employer has offered some pension improvements, they have tied them to a demand for concessions to the employees’ sick leave plan. Says Baxter, “They’re giving with one hand and taking away with the other.”

The length of the agreement and wages are also outstanding issues.

“Significant changes will have to occur at the bargaining table if this employer expects to have a negotiated settlement in this dispute,” says Baxter.

Both sides have already met in bargaining on nine separate occasions.
