MELVILLE – Municipal workers in Melville, members of CUPE 456 have served 48-hour strike notice to the City of Melville.
“Our issues are not with the residents of Melville and we hope to reach a fair settlement without major disruptions,” says CUPE 456 president Dwayne Kraft.
Details of the contract discussions will not be released publicly in respect of the bargaining process.
“City workers not only deliver quality public services,” says CUPE National representative Tim Anderson, “they contribute big time to making Melville a great place to live.”
Anderson notes that CUPE members volunteer in many ways – from firefighting to coaching to helping community organizations.
CUPE 456 represents 55 inside and outside workers in Melville who keep the city running. They ensure drinking water is safe, clear roadways after storms, maintain and operate the arena, and operate recreation programs. They have been without a contract since December 31, 2011. The Local will be in a position to take legal strike action on Saturday afternoon.
