Red Deer - CUPE members who work in the Red Deer Hospital laundry support the Regional Health Boards decision to develop a business plan and stay in the business of doing laundry at the Regional Hospital. After investigating the possibility of contracting out the health regions laundry the Region has decided it makes good business sense to keep the laundry in-house.

This is a good news day for our members, said Chris Malyon, President of CUPE 838. It has been very stressful over the last three months as the Region went through the tendering process. We knew our in-house laundry was efficient and cost effective and the tendering process has confirmed it. We are competitive with the private sector.

CUPE 838 represents over 400 health care members in the David Thompson Health Region. Some 35 full and part-time CUPE members work in the laundry at the Regional Hospital and would have been affected if the RHA had contracted out the laundry service.

CUPE is Canadas largest union representing 490,000 women and men who work in health care, education, municipalities, social services, transportation and emergency services. CUPE represents more than 29,000 members in Alberta.
