A week ago 16 members of CUPE Local 718, City of Richmond Inside Workers, received lay-off notices. The group, culture and leisure workers, had enough warning of the impending lay-offs to get together with Community Association and Cultural Boards who oversee the operations of the centres. They met and shared information about ways to fight the lay-offs.

The coalition worked swiftly. On Monday night, just a few weeks after the fightback began, Richmond City Council voted to put the lay-offs on hold. The long-term fight may not be over but these cultural and recreational workers have made a strong case for working in community coalitions.
