Canadians will soon be counted for the 2016 census.
In the next few days, Canadians will be able to complete the 2016 census online, or have a paper version mailed to their home.
Census day is May 10, but Canadians can complete their census forms as soon as they receive them.
We encourage all CUPE members to complete their census questionnaire as soon as possible, and are asking all CUPE locals inform their members on how to take part.
As public sector workers, CUPE members understand how important this information is to better serving Canadian communities.
Information collected by the census is then used by governments, associations, community organizations and others to make important decisions at the municipal, provincial and the federal levels. Results from the census are also used to decide funding allocation at all levels of government.
One in four randomly selected households in Canada will receive the 36-page long-form questionnaire known as the National Household Survey, while the remainder will receive the 10-question short version. Both are mandatory.
CUPE had urged the previous Conservative government to keep the more-reliable long-form census. We are encouraged that the Liberal government has restored it, since it ensures more accurate data.
