The Canadian Union of Public Employees joins fifteen other Canadian organizations to condemn the recent events undertaken by Brazil’s rightwing opposition parties that led to the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. The parliamentary coup was orchestrated against a democratically elected head of state that just 18 months ago was elected by 54 million votes in free, open democratic elections.

The politicians who will take over the government represent the business elites who want to dismantle core social programs implemented by President Rousseff’s Workers’ Party, and instead impose neoliberal policies, policies which have been rejected by the majority of Brazilians at the ballot box.
