New Ipsos-Reid poll
BURNABY, B.C. British Columbians are saying no to the privatization of municipal and school board services, says a new Ipsos-Reid poll commissioned by CUPE BC.
Fifty-seven per cent of B.C. households say they do not want public services, like water, sewage, street cleaning, snow removal, maintenance, custodial and other work taken over by private firms.
This is an increase of 10 per cent over a Viewpoints poll conducted two years ago.
The provincial government is pushing its privatization policy and some municipal and school board politicians have fallen into line like lemmings, CUPE BC president Barry ONeill said.
They are chanting the privatize it all mantra promoted by Gordon Campbell, ONeill added. But the public is saying they want those services delivered by municipalities and school boards, not private companies.
The poll asked respondents whether municipal and school board services should be provided by workers employed by municipalities and school boards or contracted out to private firms.
The poll of 800 households was conducted in mid-October.
