Biggar: The 46 striking education workers in the Biggar Public School Division will be picketing outside the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association office on Thursday, March 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The office is located at 2222 13th Avenue.

The school workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, are holding the information picket to highlight the divisive role the SSTA has played in contract negotiations and the seven-week old strike in the school division.

The Biggar Division Board, led by Saskatchewan School Trustees negotiator Bill Wells, has been on a power surge during this round of negotiations, attempting to strip employees of their seniority rights, job security and other contract provisions. The Board also has been hiring more and more scabs in an effort to break the strike.

Its the first time in the 30-year history of the local that members have been forced to strike to achieve a fair settlement.

The school employees work as secretaries, teaching and library assistants and caretakers in the communities of Biggar, Cando, Sonningdale, Handel, Landis and three Hutterite colonies.
