NEWFOUNDLAND and LABRADOR

Thumbs up… to the Newfoundland government for blocking a private developer’s plans for bulk export of water from Gisborne Lake. Under international trade deals, the move would have opened the floodgates for the unstoppable sale and export of Canada’s water.

Thumbs down… to the Newfoundland government for privatizing its social housing agency. Tenants — many of them seniors — and communities will suffer if the marketplace is left to provide affordable housing.

Thumbs up… to the Newfoundland government for introducing a tuition fee freeze last fall.
