Eight hundred CUPE members at two Alberta hospitals have voted for a contract which will give them a 9.25 per cent increase over the next three years. The deal includes the return of 2.75 per cent taken from the employees during cutbacks before 1995.

The employees, members of CUPE local 1240, work at the Colonel Belcher and Rockyview hospitals. They include surgical processors, pharmacy and therapy assistants, materials and supply management staff, food services staff and clerical staff.

They will get will get a one-time 2.75 per cent salary increase “adjustment” retroactive to April 1. In addition, they would receive annual salary hikes of 3.25 per cent, three per cent and three per cent in each year of the contract, to March 31, 2001.

There agreement bans the contracting out of jobs until April 1, 1999, and includes up to 40 weeks severance if jobs are lost to contracting out or technological change.
